Stevenson Educational Center Team
Each team member is committed to assisting you during your time here at Syracuse. Our goal is to make sure that the support services meet each student’s individual needs. Please don’t be afraid to ask anyone for help.
Program
All students are enrolled in a specific home college and assigned a faculty academic advisor to assist in the scheduling of classes and monitoring of progress toward their degree. The Stevenson Educational Center team, in conjunction with the faculty academic advisor, may help the student make schedule adjustments and will also monitor the compliance of all NCAA academic rules and regulations.
The Stevenson Educational Center team is involved in additional activities directed toward enhancing academic performance. Orientation programs for incoming student-athletes are held at the beginning of the first semester in order to aid in the transition. Career planning programs have been developed to assist those who are undecided on their major course of study. As student-athletes approach the end of their college careers, programs coordinated by the Stevenson Educational Center team help them enter the work force or explore graduate school opportunities.
NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program
The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program was created to support the student development initiatives of its member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting. Participating institutions in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program support a student-athlete’s development in five areas: academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service. Student-Athlete Support Services provide student-athletes the resources and direction in the following four areas.
Commitment to Academic Excellence
We focus on the enhancement of academic performance through the development of study and communication skills, goal setting, stress and time management, tutoring and mentoring. Academic performance is monitored for NCAA, BIG?EAST and SU eligibility and degree advancement toward graduation.
Commitment to Personal Development
This program provides the necessary information needed when tackling the topics and challenges facing today’s student-athlete. This component covers such topics as to what it is like being a student-athlete at SU, social development (Changes, Challenges and Choices), personal health and fiscal responsibility. Information is provided in a way that student-athletes realize the value of participating in such programming and that it is a life lesson that will benefit them well after their time at SU.
Commitment to Community
An important part of college life is the opportunity to give back to the campus and local communities. Community outreach offers student-athletes opportunities to begin a lifelong habit of service by participating in a variety of ways. Student-athletes participating in the ‘CUSE CARES Community Outreach Program visit local schools, hospitals, and have participated in events that include Special Olympics, the Ronald McDonald House, the United Way and the Boys and Girls Club. For the past twelve years student-athletes have received the Chancellor’s Award for Public Engagement & Scholarship, an award which recognizes the top students and groups on campus.
Commitment to Career Development
Career choice and direction play a crucial role in deciding a major, internship possibilities, potential graduate school selection, and eventually landing that first job after college. Our program assists student-athletes to identify career goals and aids with interviewing and job search skills. We can also provide assistance with preparation for graduate and/or professional school. The Manny Shemin Resource Room, located in the Stevenson Educational Center, provides many resources for career and graduate school exploration.
The following services are provided for all student-athletes:
• Career exploration and self-assessment
• Resume and cover letter writing assistance
• Graduate and professional school searches, including assistance with applications and preparation for the GRE and GMAT exams
• Mentoring
• Job shadowing
• Employment and internships
• Networking
• Career counseling
• General career information
• Interviewing
The Manny Shemin Resource Room also provides many workshops to help you with graduate school selection and preparation.
