PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Syracuse University volleyball and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams were honored with a 2008-09 BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. This recognition is given to each of the 23 teams with the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport.
The volleyball team posted a 3.63 cumulative GPA while the two women’s track and field teams posted a 3.43 GPA.
Ten BIG EAST schools had at least one team honored, with DePaul finishing with a conference-best seven teams recognized. Notre Dame, Seton Hall and Syracuse had three teams honored, while Cincinnati and St. John’s had two, and Georgetown, Louisville, USF and West Virginia had one each.
The volleyball team finished the 2008 season with a 17-15 overall record and made its second-consecutive appearance at the BIG EAST Championship. The women’s track & field teams finished 13th at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship and 12th at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.
The winners were chosen based on the 2008-09 grade-point average of each student-athlete that appears on an institution's squad list in a particular sport.
