6.30.09 | Track and Field

Syracuse University freshman Natalie Busby won the USA Junior National 3,000-meter steeplechase championship with a time of 10:55.25 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Busby won by just .26 seconds. The victory earned her a chance to represent the USA at the Pan American Championships in Trinidad and Tobago on July 31-August 2. She is the fourth Orange runner to make a USA Team this year.

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. – Senior Bernard Bush became just the fourth field competitor in Syracuse history to earn All-America recognition  with his performance in the long jump at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The last Syracuse field performer to earn outdoor All-America honors was Jillian Drouin in the heptathlon in 2007. The most recent male to achieve All-America status was Sam Okantey in 1999 for the triple jump, which he earned for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Senior Kyle Heath achieved All-America status for the second consecutive year in the steeplechase, placing eighth with a time of 8:45.95 at the 2009 NCAA Division I Track & Field Outdoor Championship. The last member of the SU track & field team to earn All-America honors in successive seasons was Cheree Hicks (1999-2000, Discus and Shot Put). The last male to win consecutive All-America honors was Steve Dering (1990-1991, hammer throw).

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. – Junior Uhunoma Osazuwa completed four of the first seven events in the heptathlon on Thursday at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship and is currently listed in 18th place out of 26 competitors. The Las Vegas native has compiled 3,268 points and is only 395 points behind the leader, Southern California’s Nia Ali (3,663 points).

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Despite having to wait until almost midnight to compete, senior Kyle Heath qualified for the final heat of the steeplechase event at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship hosted by the University of Arkansas. The NCAA issued a holding pattern for almost four hours as a front of severe thunderstorms made its way through John McConnell Field on Wednesday evening. The delay did not fluster Heath as he turned out a season-best time of 8:40.05 to break through to the finals on Friday, June 12 at 6:40 p.m.
