Syracuse ice hockey's first conference victories and the rearranging of the Orange indoor track & field records were brought to light this weekend for Syracuse athletics. The Orange hosted Niagara this past weekend, earning its first CHA wins in program history by finals of 2-1 and 3-1, respectively. On Friday night, junior defenseman Gabrielle Beaudry notched her first career goal for Syracuse in emphatic fashion, firing in the game-winner during the third period to lead SU to victory. On Saturday afternoon, freshman winger Janelle Malcolm answered the call of duty with her first-career game-winning goal on Saturday, netting her seventh overall goal of the season, second most on the team to elicit the 3-1 win for the Orange's second weekend sweep of the year (Sacred Heart, Oct. 31 – Nov. 1). The Syracuse track & field team set out against the nation's elite at the Penn State National Open on Friday and Saturday at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. Sophomore sprinter Flings Owusu-Agyapong thrice broke the Syracuse school record in the 60-meter dash in the prelims, semi-finals and final rounds. Owusu-Agyapong bested recorded an NCAA Provisional-qualifying mark and new-school record of 7.42 in the semi-final heat. The Toronto, Ontario native provided the Orange with a third-place finish in the finals with an NCAA Provisional-qualifying mark of 7.43. Junior Jon Buice was the toast of Happy Valley in the heptathlon, not only taking first place, but resetting his old mark of last year for a new Orange school record. Buice's 5,259 points is a new Syracuse standard in the men's indoor heptathlon; the old benchmark was his own score he set last season with 5,068 points. The men's basketball team has the weekend off, but came short at Providence on Wednesday night, 100-94. In the women's past two outings, the Orange was dealt a tough 69-51 defeat against Villanova on Saturday at the Dome but fought Marquette to an 11-point victory, 66-55, for the squad's second BIG EAST road win of the season.
